The Ornate Bichir is the most popular of all bichir species, prized for its striking coloration and intricate patterns that make it one of the most visually impressive freshwater fish. Like all bichirs, it possesses a specialized swim bladder that functions much like a lung, allowing it to breathe atmospheric air and thrive in waters with very low oxygen levels. This remarkable adaptation also enables the Ornate Bichir to survive out of water for extended periods, provided its skin remains moist.
